Printer Compatibility With the iPrinter App
iPrinter is designed to help you print from your phone to compatible printers. Printer availability depends on the printer model, supported printing technology, mobile device, operating system and network configuration. This page explains what compatibility means and what to check before printing.
What Does Compatible Mean?
A compatible printer is a printer that can communicate with your phone through a printing method supported by the iPrinter app and your mobile operating system. Compatibility does not mean that every feature or print setting is available on every printer.
Options such as paper size, page range, color output, black and white output, orientation, copies and print quality can vary according to the printer and the printing method being used.
Connection Methods
iPrinter supports mobile printing workflows available in the current version of the application. Depending on your phone and printer, printing may use a compatible local network workflow or a platform supported printing technology such as AirPrint.
For local network printer discovery, the phone and printer generally need to be reachable on the same local network. Guest networks, client isolation, VPN configurations, router settings and printer sleep states can sometimes prevent printer discovery even when both devices have WiFi access.
AirPrint Compatibility
On supported Apple devices, AirPrint requires an AirPrint enabled printer. Apple recommends that the iPhone or iPad and the printer are connected to the same WiFi network. Available AirPrint options depend on the printer and the app from which printing begins.
If your printer does not support AirPrint, another printing workflow available through iPrinter may still be possible if the printer, device and connection method are compatible.
Printer Brands
iPrinter is intended to work with compatible printers from popular printer manufacturers. Compatibility is determined by the individual printer model and supported printing method rather than the brand name alone.
We do not claim that every model from a manufacturer is supported. When we publish a brand or model as tested, it should reflect an actual compatibility test or verified product capability.
Supported Content and Print Options
Depending on the current app version and selected printer, iPrinter can help users prepare and print supported content such as documents, PDF files, photos, web content and email related files or attachments. The app also includes document and image preparation tools, including PDF management and photo cropping or editing where those features are available.
Color and black and white printing options depend on the selected printer, print workflow and printer capabilities.
Common Compatibility Limitations
- A printer may be visible on the network but may not support the printing method required by the phone or app.
- Some printer settings are controlled by the printer and may not be available inside every mobile print workflow.
- Guest WiFi or device isolation can prevent a phone from discovering a local printer.
- AirPrint requires an AirPrint enabled printer and a supported Apple device.
- Older printer firmware or unusual router configurations can affect discovery and printing.
- Feature availability can change with app, operating system, printer firmware or manufacturer updates.
How to Check Your Printer
First, make sure the printer is powered on and connected correctly. For network printing, confirm that the phone and printer can communicate on the same local network. Apple users who want to use AirPrint should also confirm that the printer is listed by its manufacturer as AirPrint enabled.
If the printer is connected but does not appear on your phone, follow our Printer Not Showing on Phone guide. If the printer cannot join the wireless network, use our Printer Won't Connect to WiFi troubleshooting guide.
If iPrinter cannot find your printer, visit our printer troubleshooting guides or contact support@iprinter.app with your printer brand, model, phone type and operating system version.
Compatibility Updates
Printer and operating system compatibility can change over time. We update this page when meaningful compatibility information changes.
